Do you update your websites content?

Why aren’t businesses updating their websites content?

Did you put loads of effort in to writing your websites initial content but now it’s been sat there for months (maybe even years)? This is a familiar story for many businesses that don’t realise that they’re actually missing a trick.

When companies regularly update their websites content this isn’t just to flex their ego – they do this because they understand the positive impact it can have on their overall web presence. Attracting more organic website visitors, increasing bounce rate (the length of time visitors stay on your website) or ranking higher in Google rankings can be influenced simply by the content you’re putting on your website and most importantly – how often.

When we say ‘update your content’ we don’t necessarily mean you need to be constantly finding new ways to say the same thing across your websites pages, although we would say this should be reviewed periodically to ensure it’s all still relevant and reflects your businesses progress. You can create new content through the use of a blog section or adding case studies. You don’t need to be an expert blogger to be writing about company news or a case study of a project you’ve recently completed. We’d recommend at least two updates a month to make a noticeable difference.

So, why aren’t businesses updating their websites content? We’ve outlined what we believe are the most common reasons below:

Fear of breaking their website – Many website owners fear making changes to their website as they believe they will break it. Cluttered dashboards and unnecessary access to the technical side of things is generally the reasoning behind this.

Finding the process too complicated – Editing pages, adding new pages or media shouldn’t be too complicated for the average computer literate person however many websites are built with non-user-friendly dashboards that make this process unnecessarily complicated.

No one to turn to if things go wrong – many businesses don’t require year round support for their website so if they do make a change and something goes wrong it can be difficult getting reactive support to sort the issue out quickly.

Not having the time – once a website is live it can be put on the back burner as the core aspect of a business takes up the majority of the working week.

Don’t know what to write about – if writing content for a website is new to someone it can seem daunting at first. We’d recommend starting with some company news or writing about recent projects you’ve completed – usually with the aid of pictures.
